Nel 1986 recita nel film L'aereo più pazzo del mondo 3, nel 1989 è fra i protagonisti del video musicale di Michael Jackson, Liberian Girl. Dal 1991 al 1994 presta la voce a B.p. Richfield, nella serie televisiva animata I Dinosauri.
Sempre nel 1994 recita la parte del giocattolaio in un episodio di Lois & Clark - Le nuove avventure di Superman. Nel 1998 partecipa al film Effetti collaterali, nel 2001 appare nel video musicale di Nelly Batter Up.
Nel 2005 presta la sua voce per I Griffin. Nel 2009 è nel cast di American Pie - Il manuale del sesso.
Rimasto comunque legato al ruolo di George Jefferson, torna ad interpretare tale ruolo nell'episodio pilota della serie televisiva P/S - Pronto soccorso, in due puntate di Willy, il principe di Bel Air, nel film Mafia! e nel 2011 in un episodio del telefilm House of Payne.
È stato trovato morto nella sua casa di El Paso il 24 luglio 2012, all'età di 74 anni.

Sherman Hemsley, who starred in the iconic 1970s sitcom The Jeffersons, was found dead in his El Paso, TX home today, according to reports. He was 74. Hemsley was personally picked by All In The Family creator Norman Lear to play George Jefferson alongside Louise Jefferson (Isabel Sanford) as the newly arrived neighbors of Archie and Edith Bunker. Lear eventually spun off the characters in 1975 and created The Jeffersons, about a successful black family who lived in Manhattan. The show ran 10 years. Hemsley, who also starred on Broadway in the 1970s musical comedy Purlie, later starred on the sitcom Amen playing a church deacon.
